‘There once was a man who became unstuck in the world – instead of hooks or a net, he threw himself into the sea. He was never thirsty.’

Arriving via a wooden boat from Male we were greeted by little huts scattered across a sparkling turquoise ocean.

Only connected by whitewashed boardwalks and a collective desire to be at one with the ocean.

As we meandered along we were easily distracted by the rainbow fish swimming through the crystal clear waters below us, closely followed by the quick moving reef sharks.

Sun filled days were spent snorkeling over coral gardens, or following the majestic whale sharks in the endless cobalt sea surrounding us.

Felt like being castaway on a deserted paradise where thoughts seemed to endlessly drift upon a constant feeling of content and happiness.

The ever-shining sun gauged time, my only protection a wide breamed straw hat (for which I had annoyingly dragged as carry on for 3 international flights)!

Dinners consisted of the freshest seafood and endless glasses of wine, which went down much easier as part of the all inclusive package.

The only thing close to matching the surreal wounders of the magical hideaway were the Maldivian locals who were so warm, welcoming and evidently very proud of their beautiful homeland as evidence by the affinity with the aquatic playground at their door step.

For what I would have thought to be a once in a lifetime destination – it will be hard to not return.

where to stay: we stayed at Centara Grand Island Resort. This place surpassed every expectation I could have had. If possible, I recommend a ocean water villa or the sunset ocean water villa to appreciate the sunset and your own personal deck with private access to the sea!

how to get there: I flew from Bali to Male (capital of the Maldives) with Tiger Air. The resort will arrange your transfer which consists of a quick domestic flight from Male and a 30 minute speed boat to the island. We flew back to Male in the Sea plane which I would highly recommend ~ it means getting an extra couple of hours in paradise and the view from the top of the aqua atolls is spectacular. Singapore Airlines will fly you home via Singapore.
